Top Ten Favorite Books With USA Setting

toptentuesday-1

Thank you The Broke and the Bookish for this wonderful Tuesday Meme

This week we have Top Ten Favorite Book With X Setting. Anjie and I deliberated for a while because we weren’t sure what setting to choose. In the end, we ended up picking, Top Ten Favorite Books With USA Setting. We decided to pick a broad setting like the United States of America because #1 it would be easier to find books, and #2 we could both find books with the same setting within each of our genre of expertise.

If you would like to know more about the books in our list, click on the picture of the book.

Veronica’s List:

1. The Book of Broken Hearts by Sarah Ockler:

Location? Blackfeather, Colorado. Ingredients? Mountains, Family, Barbecues, Forests, and the Vargas Boys.

The Book of Broken Hearts

2. Prep School Confidential by Kara Taylor:

Boston, Massachusetts is hit by a murder, and some know who hit it. The person that needs to figure it out is Anne Dowling.

3. Second Chance Summer by Morgan Matson:

East Coast-ers like to spend their summers on a lake in Pennsylvania. Locals + vacationers + second chances = A Second Chance Summer for Taylor Edwards.

Second Chance Summer

4. What Happened to Goodbye by Sarah Dessen:

McLean’s last stop is Lakeview, North Carolina, where she will have to face up to everything she has been running away from. Whathappend-To-

5. Let The Sky Fall by Shannon Messenger:

The California Coachella Valley is known for its extreme hot and cold weather, its dryness (it is a desert), and having a very windy area. Enter Audra the sylph (air elemental) + Vane (a boy who cannot remember anything before the age of 10) + a unknown heritage = Let The Sky Fall. 15801169

Anjie’s List:

6. The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin:

It is set in Miami, FL, and I was really excited about that because I live there. It was nice reading about the place I live in a book, a great one at that.

51i+0ZWJyeL

7. Percy Jackson & The Olympians series by Rick Riordan:

I know it’s not just one book, but the setting of it is all over the US, so it’s perfect for this week. I loved how in this series Olympus moved to the top of the Empire State building in New York, and the Underworld was in Hollywood, California.

percy

8. Unearthly by Cynthia Hand:

The novel is set in Wyoming. I loved the descriptions of nature and the mountains. Wyoming sounds so peaceful, of course not counting the fire that the main character envisions. 😉

Unearthly by Cynthia Hand

9. The Last Song by Nicholas Sparks:

The Last Song is one of my favorite books by him and the location is amazing (right by the beach!). I really love that the setting is consistent throughout all of Nicholas Sparks’ novels. They’re either in North or South Carolina.

200909-the-last-song

10. Bloodlines by Richelle Mead:

It takes place in Palm Springs, California. It’s pretty much a desert, as described in the book, with scorching temperatures. Not exactly a paradise, but the books in the series are phenomenal! (Veronica: I live about an hour away from Palm Springs and Richelle Mead’s description of it is dead on! It’s so hot that I do not understand why people even live there! I sound just like Adrian now.)

Top Ten Auto-Buy Authors

toptentuesday

Thank you The Broke and the Bookish for this wonderful Tuesday Meme

This week, I am doing a Top Ten Tuesday that has been done in the past and not the one we are supposed to be doing this week because, I can’t seem to think of enough endings or beginnings that “wow’d” me. Instead, I will be doing Top Ten Auto-Buy Authors.

Veronica’s List:

1. Sarah Dessen – Some people say that she is the Queen of YA Contemporary and I can see why the shoe fits. She has written over 10 books and each one unique in its own way. She is able to capture the struggles and changes that go through a teenage girl’s life perfectly in different scenarios and circumstances. Her books are never fluff to me. They always teach me something and that is why I love them.

Whathappend-To-

2. Richelle Mead – She is sassy, she is sarcastic, and she’s funny as heck! The main characters are always funny in their own way, Rose with her “I’ll kick your butt” type of funny, Sydney’s “I am smarter than thou and why must I deal with you people” funny, or Adrian who is an honorary member of AYE. Her readers cannot help falling in love with all of her characters.

books_vampireacademy_big

3. Sarah Ockler – Her books are so realistic and fun to read (fun as in it will make you feel many things) that I never stop to think twice and automatically buy her books. Her books aren’t just about love relationships, family and friendship are important themes in each of her books and I love her for that. We need more YA books that make family important.

bittersweet

4. Ally Carter – She writes about Spies and Thieves. That’s all you really need to know. If you are a fan of the USA Network and shows like White Collar and Psych, pick up any book by this author. You won’t be disappointed.

Heist-SOCIETY-final only-the-good

5. Morgan Matson – Ms. Matson is up there with Sarah Ockler and Sarah Dessen. She writes phenomenally. I don’t know how she isn’t that famous yet.

Second Chance Summer

Anjie’s List:

6. Rick Riordan – I know I may be a little too old for his books, especially the Percy Jackson series which came out when I was in the 8th grade. I read the PJO series when I started college, and I fell in love! I love the characters he created, and I love how he included mythical education into his books!

percy

7. Cassandra Clare – Besides the fact that I have a theory that she hates the Herondales, her writing is simply beautiful. The Infernal Devices is simply my favorite trilogy ever, and my reasons are many. The plot that she created, the words she penned, and the characters that she brought to life are only a few of the reasons why I am such a big fan of CC.

the-infernal-devices-trilogy

8. Lauren Oliver – She became one of my favorite authors because her writing is also beautiful! Her writing is so poetic that I feel as if I am reading a poetry book and not a novel. Even though I don’t agree with some of the plot in the Delirium trilogy, the books surprised me, and I loved that she wrote it to what she believed the characters would do and not what the fans wanted them to do (which is definitely the easier route).

Delirium-Trilogy-delirium-31382340-780-392

9. Nicholas Sparks – He is my favorite contemporary author and that’s saying a lot from me. I have all his books and I love most of them. He’s a great writer and even though some plots are tragic, he truly makes you feel what the characters feel in the books.

nicholas_sparks_safe_haven_book_cover.jpg

10. Veronica Roth – I love her personality and her relationship with her fans! I think she’s an amazing writer as well! Divergent was an instant favorite and I can’t wait to see more from her in Allegiant and her future books!!

Top Ten Authors Who Deserve More Recognition

toptentuesday

Thank you The Broke and the Bookish for this wonderful Tuesday Meme

This week’s topic is Top Ten Authors Who Deserve More Recognition.

Veronica’s List:

yaphilbin

1. Joanna Philbin: One day I was browsing the YA section at Barnes and Noble’s and this book cover caught my eye. After seeing what the story was about, I bought. Ever since then, I read anything Joanna Philbin writes. I love authors whose writing is effortless to read. She’s one of those authors. 🙂

5779746

2. Jennifer Jabaley: Sadly, Jennifer only has two novels out, but I still love her. I like the way she builds the world and can write about heavy or silly subjects, but still make them enjoyable.

The-Cupcake-Queen-by-Heather-Hepler

3. Heather Hepler: I’ve only read The Cupcake Queen by Ms. Hepler, but just with one novel I was sold. As I was reading the story I felt as if I was in the bakery. Now… I want a cupcake.

images

4. Lisa & Laura Roecker: This duo of writing sisters are my favorite at the moment. Their murder mystery novels are fantastic. Especially, The Liar Society series. Their writing is witty. At times a little harsh, but in a good way.

7786099524_7cb0a1cec0

5. Sarah Ockler: She is one of the few authors that is able to not just cast a spotlight on the romance, but on other types of love, like the love between family members and friends.

Anjie’s List:

7285498

6. Courtney Allison Moulton: Angelfire is one of my favorite trilogies of all time! Courtney created amazing characters that I really loved, especially the heroine and I usually can’t stand some of them.

if-i-stay-gayle-forman

7. Gayle Forman: I especially loved her duology, If I Stay & Where She Went. The plot and the writing brought me to tears!

10507293

8. Kiera Cass: She is a new favorite of mine! I love her writing style and The Selection was an amazing read and after reading the sequel, The Elite, I wanted more!

graceling

9. Kristin Cashore: She might be a bit more known than the others on the list but I still think she’s great! I loved Graceling and the world that she built in the novels.

10. Aimee Carter: I love Greek mythology and because of Aimee, I’m madly in love with Hades!

Top Ten Best/Worst Movie Adaptations

toptentuesdayThank you The Broke and The Bookish for this wonderful Tuesday Meme

This week’s topic is Top Ten Best/Worst Movie Adaptations. Since there aren’t too many book to movie adaptations that we have both read and seen, we decided to do it a little differently. We’re splitting up the list to movies we’ve both seen and then to movies we’ve individually seen.

Movies in Common:

The-Hunger-Games-Movie-Poster

1. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

VeronicaBest: Many fans were upset about how THG turned out. I myself am not one of those. While I was sad how Gale was portrayed and the shaky camera was a bit annoying at times, I liked the adaptation we got. I don’t think we could have gotten something better.

Anjie- Best: This is one of my favorite movies of all time. Now I know it wasn’t exactly like the book, but it was still great! I especially loved the first scene at the cornucopia, very suspenseful, and I really liked the effects and graphics.

The-Host-Movie-Poster-Large

2. The Host by Stephenie Meyer

VeronicaBest: I am very happy with The Host. I thought the voice over was a good move on the director’s part or else she would have just looked like a crazy person talking to themselves.

Anjie- Best: I absolutely love this film and that’s based on a lot of factors. I loved the actors (Hello, Max Irons), the scenery, effects, music, and score. I met the actors and I think that also boosted it up. I know that they cut off a lot, including characters, but I came into the theater expecting that so it didn’t bother me as much.

twilight

3. Twilight by Stephenie Meyer

Veronica– Worst: This was a bad adaptation of the movie. Catherine, the director, made very cheesy decisions. I appreciated the film when I watched it because at the time it came out I liked the series a lot and was a Rob Patz fan, but now… I see how lackluster it really is.

Anjie- Worst: Not too sure if this is popular or unpopular opinion but yes, I hated the movie. I loved the books and I guess that expectation fell short once I saw the casting of Edward & Bella. I still decided to give them a chance, but I couldn’t anymore after I saw the acting. It was very awkward and just, not the best.

walk_to_remember

4. A Walk to Remember by Nicholas Sparks

Veronica– Best: I read A Walk to Remember after I saw the movie, which is why I see the movie and the book as two separate things. I like to think of them as a set, companions if you will. The book is a little more… dull than the movie. Whoever wrote the script for the movie did a wonderful job at making it really good. I love the book and movie equally though. Each gives you something else to add on to this wonderful story.

Anjie- Best: Okay, the novel and the movie have  similarities, but how Landon & Jamie came to be partnered up was completely different. Even so, I enjoyed the movie a lot more than the book. It was actually hard for me to pass the first chapter.

Veronica’s List:

200px-Love_comes_softly

5. Love Comes Softly by Janette Oke

Best: Love Come Softly is a book I wasn’t able to finish because honestly, it bored me. I really wanted to love it, but I couldn’t. The movie though was FANTASTIC. I believe this is where Katherine Heigl first made her debut in the movie world. Her character in this movie is very different from any other she has ever played and its one of the reasons why I love this movie so much. I love the characters, the charm, everything. (I own the complete love comes softly series in DVD. Yup. I’m a fan.)

sisterhood_of_the_traveling_pants

6. The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants by Ann Brashares

Best: I know my answer is not the popular answer when it comes to this film but I think that it is the best film that could have been made for this book. How the book is written would be hard to transfer on to the screen because it has 4 main characters, 4 different stories. I love the actors they picked and the movie. Yes, a lot was cut out of it but nonetheless I still love it.

princess_diaries_ver1

7. The Princess Diaries by Meg Cabot

Worst: First of, if The Princess Diaries were just a movie with no book behind it, I would love it, but since this is all about the book to adaptation business, I dislike it. The grandma is supposed to be evil, Michael isn’t supposed to be how they portrayed him to be, Lily, Mia’s best friend is also different from the one in the books, the only one that stayed the same is Mia. Oh and Josh but let’s not talk about that boy. The series has 10 books and there are only 2 movies. The second movie is just an excuse. It can’t even be counted as a part of the book to movie adaptation to me.

Anjie’s List:

percy_jackson_and_the_olympians_the_lightning_thief_ver2

8. Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan
Worst: I think that anyone who read and loved this book would be disappointed at the director’s change. They eliminated the main antagonist and a couple of other characters important to the series. They also changed a lot of scenes. It seemed as if the screenwriters hadn’t read the book or something.

AM:TP final

9. The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger

Best: Not exactly the best adaptation out there but it’s one of the better ones. They packed in most of the important scenes and I think that it essentially touched bases with the novel.

my_sisters_keeper

10. My Sister’s Keeper by Jodi Picoult

Worst: Honestly, it wasn’t as bad as The Lightning Thief but it wasn’t good either. They removed some characters and they changed the ending! I understand removing characters, they weren’t as important to the story but to change the ending is like changing Picoult’s writing.

Top Ten Most Intimidating Books

toptentuesday-1

Thank you The Broke and The Bookish for this wonderful Tuesday meme.

This week’s topic is Top Ten Most Intimidating Books! Anjie and I will be splitting the list again for the sake of consistency. And here we go!

Veronica’s List:

1. The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness

the_knife_of_never_letting_go_by_patrick_ness

I received this book as a gift back in March (I think), and I still haven’t read it. Most of my bookish friends have loved it and I fear I might not like it. The size of the book is also intimidating me.

2. The Maze Runner by James Dashner

200px-The_Maze_Runner_cover

I bought this book because the movie is coming out soon. Almost everyone I know hates this book except one person (That person would be Anjie. Haha). I took a leap of faith buying this book and now I’m scared it will disappoint me. Verdict: It is sitting on my book shelf… lonely.

3. The One by Kiera Cass

The one

‘The One’ hasn’t been released yet I am very intimidated by it. Being the last book in the trilogy, I want so many things to be resolved and I want so many things to happen, it is ridiculous. Not everything will get resolved and what does get resolved might not even be how I want it to. I am wearily anticipating this book, hoping it will not shred my feels into oblivion.

4. Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte

jane_eyre.large

I’ve read very few classics in my life. This classic has been sitting on my shelf, waiting for me to read it. I loved Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte and I’m hoping I’ll love her sister’s written work as well. The size of the book and the difficult language in the novel has had me turning a blind eye when I see it sitting on my book shelf.

5. Legend by Marie Lu

Legend_Marie_Lu_Book_cover

I’m halfway through this book and I can’t take it. I don’t know if I can keep going. Nope. Nu uh. Not happening any time soon.

Anjie’s List:

6. Unravel Me by Tahereh Mafi

UnravelMe4av2blue

Many who have read ‘Unravel Me’ have told me that they’ve changed their loyalties towards a certain character and I really don’t want that to happen.

7. The Kill Order James by Dashner

13089710

I liked the Maze Runner trilogy and I’m uncertain about prequels and if it will ruin my feelings for the Maze Runner.

8. Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake

anna-cover

This sounds like a suspenseful thriller filled with ghosts and everything I’m afraid of reading. Enough said.

9. The Iron Daughter by Julie Kagawa

The-Iron-Daughter

I read the first book in the series and I wasn’t impressed with it. I feel like if I read this, my opinion won’t change and I’m going have to drop the series.

10. The Host by Stephenie Mayer

200px-The_Host

I honestly put off reading this book because of Twilight. I loved Twilight in the beginning and a book separate from the themes within twilight sort of scared me. (Veronica: Anjie’s opinion of this book changed after she read it. Max Irons <3)

Top Ten Books We’ve Read So Far In 2013

toptentuesday-1Thank you The Broke and The Bookish for this wonderful Tuesday Feature.

Today’s Top Ten Tuesday is: Top Ten Books I’ve Read So Far In 2013! Today is the first post Anjie will be participating in so we will be splitting this post into my Top 5 and her Top 5. Here we go!

Veronica’s:

1. The Unearthly Trilogy by Cynthia Hand:

Unearthly by Cynthia Hand
Unearthly by Cynthia Hand

Apart from The Infernal Devices, I hadn’t been enjoying any fantasy or paranormal series as of late but the Unearthly Trilogy made me remember why I loved reading Fantasy when I was younger. The plot twists, the characters, the world, and the roller coaster ride that are the books are something you need in your life. Trust me.

2. The Book of Broken Hearts by Sarah Ockler

The Book of Broken Hearts
The Book of Broken Hearts by Srah Ockler

I am a fan of Sarah Ockler and her new book did not disappoint, but made my love for her books intensify. This book envelopes family, romance, and tragedy all in one. It will break your heart in a good way.

3. The Fault in Our Stars by John Green

I don’t know what I could say to make you want to read this book. I will let the book speak for itself. Go buy it and then, we’ll talk.

4. Catching Jordan by Miranda Kenneally

Catching Jordan by Miranda
Catching Jordan by Miranda Kenneally

Who knew I could relate to a girl who is the captain of the football team, but I did. I loved this book in so many ways. This book was real, not in a tragic sense as we see in a lot of recent YA books, but in a sense how in life ,we don’t always get what we expect and sometimes, it is exactly what we need.

5. Perfect Scoundrels by Ally Carter

Perfect Scoundrels by Ally Carter
Perfect Scoundrels by Ally Carter

Kat Bishop is one of my favorite female characters of all time. This book brought out a whole new side to Kat and Hale. Any book by Ally Carter is like chocolate to me. Pure unadulterated chocolate.

Anjie’s:

6. The Clockwork Princess by Cassandra Clare

Favorite book and favorite trilogy of all time. I thought it ended perfectly, it did smother me in feels but I was happy and it was truly beautiful and tragic at the same time.

7.The Indigo Spell by Richelle Mead

First book in the trilogy and it really surprised me. It’s a twist in the usual Greek mythology that will make you love Hades. It was an easy and entertaining read.
